Davison School is committed to making our school and playground an inviting and safe place to be. In October 2023 we had a fence area installed for our PreK students. This will give students a safe place to play as well an opportunity to be outside more often. It will also serve as a drop off and pick up location for parents. When we talk it is a safe place to share. We build capacity to promote equity/inclusion through “spaces” acknowledging their importance. January 2023 we will participate in Bell Let’s Talk Day by open to talking about our story. By February 2024 there will be visual representation throughout the school environment to show that we have participated in Bell's Let's Talk Day
Visual representation in hallways, library, entrances, etc. Sharing mindful strategies with families on our website and through the school newsletter.

Fostering connections and supporting transitions |
Aug 30, 2023 - The sign board outside the school will have a welcoming and encouraging message to welcome students and families to the school and into the transition of a new school year and grade. Ongoing - When new families are interested in registering students at Davison, CT will be the opportunity to lead the school tour. Admin will cover the classroom supervision if needed. When a family registers online (without notice to the school) we will make sure we send an email letting the family know we received the registration as well as welcoming them to Davison School. November/December 2023 - Term 1 conferences will give teachers a chance to engage with parents either in person or by phone. On December 14, 2023 Davison will host a winter concert that families will be invited to celebrate their child's/children's class performance. March 2023- Term 2 conferences will be held giving students and their families a chance to engage with teachers. June 2024 - We Learn Day (families will be asked to share their gifts and talents with students0 |
We acknowledge the fact that the sign out front of the school is a place that's highly visible to our community and families. It is a place where families take pictures and provides representation of our school on social media. The communication from the school on the board should be informative but also very welcoming and current. At this point we have a Meet the Family event at the start of the year. Currently Admin or Admin Assistants are leading the tour. For families who register after the start of the school year, the CT doesn’t always get the chance to meet families or begin building a trusting relationship with them in an informal setting. The opportunity to lead the tour provides a face to face meeting with the families and the opportunity to begin building a trusting relationship. At this time the school has not had a big event where the community has been invited in. The concert is a way for the community to come in and reconnect. For the We Learn Day the Engagement SLP groups will organize the initial logistics of this event. We will request that some time be given during a staff meeting to discuss how this event would come to fruition (ie: time/dayk buses, groupings, etc.). There would be K-3 options and Grade 4-6 options. Davison School will promote transitions with our Grade 6 students moving to MCS next year with the following events:

Valuing input from students, families, staff, and the community |
Aug 30, 2023 - Teachers will supply a survey to each family at meet the family night with idea of content areas families may be able to contribute towards student learning but also the opportunity to give ideas of ways they can contribute to the classroom learning. An email will be sent out to all staff asking how many forms were collected and whether staff was able to make a plan for engagement in the future.
|
We want families to feel welcome to contribute towards student learning. In the past when general invitations were offered there was little response. We would like to give families specific ideas of ways they can contribute to their child's learning and environment. |
PLC group will make the form.

Communicating openly and clearly |
Sept 2023 - PLC group will explain to parents that we are working on engaging every family in the school this year and that all are welcome within our school. This will be included in the end of September newsletter. This message will be spread in conjunction with the SCC who will welcome families into the school by providing hotdogs. By December 2023 the SCC will support this goal by assisting classrooms and the school by sharing weekly posts and school activities. Staff will be asked to share photos and a short explanation of the photo to davisonscc@gmail.com. We encourage staff to share at least one photo per month with the SCC. By September 2024 there will be an introduction of each staff member which will include their name, role in the building, their family, a "if I wasn't at school I would be at" and why their why for being an educator. A natural picture of each staff member will be included. |
Since Covid families still aren't sure if they are welcome in the school past the office. We want all families to know that they are welcome in their child's learning and environment. Our marginalized families aren't alway accessing Edsby and we feel like there needs to be a way to bridge the communication gap between families and the school. Social media is a less formal and approachable platform for families to learn more about what is happening within the school and who their child/children is working with. September 2023 Newsletter Quote: Welcome students, parents and staff to the 2023 -24 school year. We would like to thank all the families for stopping by to meet their teachers and dropping of their belongings on Thursday, August 31 to make the first day a bit easier. A special thank you to the SCC for cooking and handing out the delicious hotdogs. The families of our students are awesome! We know how much you care about your children and their education. We would like to remind you that we welcome families into our school and into our classrooms. When you arrive at school, use the front door and doorbell if needed and one of our staff members would be happy to welcome you into the school. If you or another member of your family has some knowledge or experience that they would like to share with your child's class, please let your child's teacher know! We would love to arrange a time for you to come to the classroom. Children are always to excited when they are able to invite their families into their classroom and into their learning!

Forming partnerships to support GSSD’s priority areas |
Pending replacement of the Indigenous Community Worker this goal will be implemented. The Indigenous Community Worker will visit classrooms and the playground to introduce themselves and let the students know their role in the school so students and staff are aware of who she is and how she can support students families and staff. Staff will be aware of the plan, location, dates and times the ICW will be in the building (possibly a week at a glance) and a clear transparent plan for their role in our school will be developed in partnership with staff and the ICW to support students and families. The ICW will write up an introduction of who they are and their role in the school. A separate email will be sent to all families with this write up and a photo so that families are aware of who the ICW is and how they can support. Any concerns that the staff have about students will be communicated with the principal. The principal will ensure the concerns the staff are expressing are communicated to the ICW. |
We have not had a support worker of this nature in the school. We plan to utilize their skills and knowledge to best support our marginalized students and families. |
